Why the curve looks like 15, then 24, then +4 forever: cats compress an enormous amount of development into their first year — nursing, weaning, reaching sexual maturity by roughly 5 to 6 months, and finishing most skeletal growth by 12 months — which is why year one alone is worth about 15 human years. Year two adds a smaller 9 (bringing the running total to 24) as the cat finishes rounding out into full adult size and behavior. After that, the rate flattens into a near-constant +4 human years per calendar year: a 10-year-old cat works out to 24 + 4×8 = 56, and a 15-year-old to 24 + 4×13 = 76 — numbers that hold for essentially any breed, which is the interesting part.
Contrast that with dogs, where this site's own dog-age chart shows a 22-year human-year spread between small and giant breeds at the same chronological dog-age of 10 (56 for a small dog vs. 78 for a giant one). Nothing like that spread exists for cats, and the reason is about body size, not aging biology: this tool's own breed database ranges from a 2 kg Singapura up to an 11 kg Savannah, roughly a 5.5× weight spread, while the companion dog database ranges from a 1.5 kg Chihuahua to a 100 kg Mastiff, a 67× spread. Dogs were bred for centuries into wildly different working sizes — herding, guarding, retrieving — and the size-linked IGF-1 growth-hormone effect that makes giant dog breeds age faster later in life has no comparable breed-driven size range to act on in cats. So one aging curve fits nearly every cat breed, and AAFP/AAHA has never needed to publish a size-tiered chart the way the AKC has for dogs.
What AAFP/AAHA actually standardized in 2021 is the life-stage boundaries, not the 15/24/+4 arithmetic itself: kitten (birth to 1 year), young adult (1 to 6 years), mature adult (7 to 10 years), and senior (over 10 years) — consolidated down from an earlier six-stage scheme. This tool keeps a finer split within "senior" (senior 11–14, geriatric 15+), closer to that earlier six-stage version, which is useful for distinguishing a 12-year-old cat from an 18-year-old one even though the current official guideline lumps both simply as "senior." Indoor vs. outdoor living changes expected lifespan, not the aging rate: an outdoor cat's risk profile — vehicle strikes, predation, infectious-disease exposure such as FeLV/FIV, general environmental hazards — shortens the realistic upper bound of its lifespan, which is why this tool trims the "typical lifespan" reference range down by about 3 years for outdoor cats before computing the percentage-of-lifespan bar. But a cat's raw human-year-equivalent number, computed from age alone, stays exactly the same either way, because that conversion is a biological-maturity model, not a life-expectancy model — two different questions that are easy to blur together.
