Toxicity from chocolate comes almost entirely from theobromine, a caffeine relative that dogs clear from the bloodstream far more slowly than people do. Its half-life in a dog is roughly 17 to 18 hours, against about 6 hours in a human, which is exactly why a dog can look fine for half a day and then get worse. The tool reduces everything you enter to one number: total theobromine in milligrams, divided by the dog's weight in kilograms. That mg/kg figure is what veterinary toxicology tables are built around, not the raw weight of chocolate eaten. A 3 kg dog and a 30 kg dog that each eat 30 g of the same bar are not equally at risk. Worked example, moderate case: a 30.5 kg Labrador Retriever, the midpoint of the breed's typical 25 to 36 kg range, eats 100 g of baking chocolate. Total theobromine is 100 g times 15 mg/g, or 1,500 mg. Dose is 1,500 mg divided by 30.5 kg, about 49 mg/kg, inside the 40 to 60 mg/kg band this tool calls moderate, where cardiac effects such as a racing heart and high blood pressure become the concern rather than just an upset stomach. The same 100 g in milk chocolate, at 2.0 mg/g, would give that dog only 200 mg divided by 30.5 kg, about 6.6 mg/kg, below the 20 mg/kg point where clinical signs typically start at all.
Worked example, severe case, and the reason small dogs dominate the danger: a 2.25 kg Chihuahua, the midpoint of 1.5 to 3 kg, eats just 30 g of that same baking chocolate. That is 450 mg divided by 2.25 kg, or 200 mg/kg. Veterinary toxicology literature puts the oral LD50 for theobromine in dogs, the dose lethal to half of test subjects, at roughly 100 to 200 mg/kg. This Chihuahua's dose sits at the top edge of that lethal range, from one ounce of baking chocolate. Same product, one third the amount eaten compared to the Labrador example, and the outcome is categorically worse, because the divisor is so much smaller.
At zero on either input, the tool shows no result rather than a fabricated risk level, on purpose. A weight or amount of zero is not a real case, and printing a reassuring label for an unanswered field would be actively misleading.
Where this calculator gets it wrong, and it will, in specific and predictable ways: it prices in theobromine and caffeine only, not the fat, sugar, or xylitol some chocolate-adjacent products contain, any of which can cause vomiting or pancreatitis on their own, independent of the theobromine dose the tool reports. It assumes you know the exact grams eaten, but real cases are almost always a guess. An owner finding a chewed-open wrapper does not know how much was already gone, and guessing low is the single most common way this number understates the real dose. It applies one theobromine concentration per category, but a dark chocolate label reading 45 to 59 percent cacao covers a wide range of actual cocoa-solid content, and two bars in that same bin can differ 20 to 30 percent in theobromine per gram. If you used the breed search instead of a scale, the prefilled weight is a population midpoint for that breed, not your specific dog, and a small-for-breed dog is at higher real risk than the number shown. The 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg tiers are population averages drawn from clinical literature; a dog with existing heart or kidney disease, or a young puppy, can show serious effects at a meaningfully lower dose than these thresholds suggest. And this is a dog-specific tool. Cats are also theobromine-sensitive, but they typically ingest far less of it since cats lack a sweet-taste receptor, and their toxic-dose profile differs from a dog's; none of the numbers here should be applied to a cat exposure.

FAQ
- Does the calculator account for fat, sugar, or xylitol in the chocolate?
- No. It estimates theobromine and caffeine only. Some chocolate-coated or sugar-free products contain fat, sugar, or xylitol that can cause vomiting, pancreatitis, or a dangerous blood-sugar crash independent of the theobromine dose. A low theobromine result does not mean the product itself was safe to eat.
- My dog only shows mild symptoms so far. Why does the tool say moderate or severe?
- Symptoms lag behind the dose. Dogs clear theobromine slowly, with a half-life around 17 to 18 hours, so clinical signs can take up to 12 hours to appear and can still worsen over that window even if your dog seems fine right now. The risk tier reflects the dose already ingested, not the symptoms observed so far.
- Is a result below 20 mg/kg definitely safe?
