Where the text goes depends on the voice: on-device voices synthesise speech locally, while voices marked ☁ are online voices (for example Chrome's Google voices) that send the text to the browser's provider to be spoken. By default the page picks an on-device voice in your language when one is available. The available voices depend on your operating system and browser; Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android each ship with a set of natural-sounding voices, often in multiple languages. Speed control lets you slow down for careful listening or speed up for quick review.
