How it works

About

Sleep cycles last about 90 minutes each, moving through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM stages. Waking at the end of a complete cycle — rather than mid-cycle — dramatically reduces morning grogginess. This calculator also factors in the average 14 minutes it takes most adults to fall asleep, so the suggested times reflect when you should actually lie down, not just when you plan to. Enter either your target wake-up time or the time you plan to go to bed, and the tool instantly shows 3–6 cycle options ranked from ideal (5–6 cycles, 7.5–9 h) to minimum (3 cycles, 4.5 h). Everything runs privately inside your browser — no account, no data upload, no internet connection required after the page loads.

How to use

  1. Choose a mode: 'I want to wake up at…' or 'I want to go to bed at…' depending on which time you already know.
  2. Enter your target wake-up time or planned bedtime using the time picker, then click Calculate (or press Enter).
  3. Review up to four suggested times ranked Ideal, OK, or Minimum, each showing the number of sleep cycles and total sleep duration.
  4. Aim for an Ideal result — 5 or 6 cycles (7.5–9 hours) — for the most restorative sleep. The 14-minute fall-asleep buffer is already included.
  5. Your last entry is saved automatically in your browser, so the result is ready next time you open the tool — no account needed.

FAQ

Is this sleep calculator free to use?
Yes, completely free — no sign-up, no subscription, and no hidden fees. Toolio is a free, browser-based utility that costs nothing to use.
Does this tool work offline? Do I need an internet connection?
Yes. Once the page loads, everything runs inside your browser with no network calls. You can even bookmark it and use it offline — ideal for quickly checking bedtime without Wi-Fi.
Is my sleep data private? Does anything get sent to a server?
Your data never leaves your device. All calculations happen locally in your browser, and nothing is uploaded to any server. Your times are only saved in your own browser's localStorage.
Why does the calculator add 14 minutes to fall-asleep time?
Sleep research shows most healthy adults take about 14 minutes to fall asleep after lying down. Adding this buffer means the suggested times reflect when you should lie down, not when you actually fall asleep, making the recommendations more accurate in practice.
How many sleep cycles do I need each night?
Most adults need 5–6 complete cycles (7.5–9 hours) for optimal rest. Four cycles (6 hours) is the practical minimum for most people. The calculator marks 5–6 cycles as Ideal and 4 cycles as OK, so you can choose based on your schedule.
